What is block paving?

Block paving comprises a substrate base followed by a grit screed layer, on top of which is laid the more decorative and aesthetically pleasing paving itself. Further elements and materials may be required, based on drainage or issues pertaining to the elements. The paving itself consists of the patterns or blocks that are used. High pressure rotary technology can clean and maintain a number of different surface types, including block paving. In this way, a block paving surface may be adequately protected for long periods of time.

Edgings may comprise other materials, and walls or other features may be built to enhance the features of block paving. Block paving is known as a “hard landscaping” method of enhancing a garden or driveway, as against soft landscaping, which comprises shrubbery, lawns and trees. The phrase is felicitous, as block paving is often far more aesthetically pleasing than other methods of laying a driveway or similar area. However, it is not simply used in landscaping. It is also used in the likes of petrol station forecourts, public utility areas, car parks and roads. The requirements of block paving may involve considerations pertaining to drainage. These issues may be resolved with retaining walls or edging to accommodate them (13 Jan 11).
